The Wanting (poem)
The Wanting
I’ve lived much of life
Thinking I want more
Spent my time yearning
For things I can’t afford
Expounding that my home
“Isn’t big enough!!”
Feeling like I need more space
And “Things to fill it up”
Listening to the outside voice
That makes you think inside
If only I could get more stuff
Within it I could hide
A place to say “Look at this!”
“Look at all my wealth
So much room, a place to bloom
More stuff upon my shelf!!!”
That voice it tells us lies...you know
That we shouldn’t trust
As you look deep inside
Your heart has room enough
I then shook my head and thought
What if it’s not true?
Bigger houses cars and stuff
Do not give clearer views...
I took a look all around
And soon realized
It’s not about the things you own
Or your home it’s size
It’s much more than that you see
It’s not about the score
What matters is your inner heart
And it’s open door
I became aware- right quick
Of a simple truth
My want and need for all the things
Was stealing at my youth
I got quiet-still within
Studied all around
The things the most important
That kept my innards sound
My cup was full of coffee
My plate it had some fare
My tap clean flowed with water
As much as I can spare
My body fluid moves
I have fresh air to breathe
My hands they can explore
Make music for me
My eyes freely see the sky
All marvels that it brings
My ears can hear the birds
And the songs they sing
My feet can help me stand
And what’s better yet
My heart has kept its beat so far
Rhythmic in my chest
My lips can tell you stories
Or yell into the sky
My muscles strength and glory
Run so fast I FLY!!!
Knowing that little things
Noticed everyday
Make you bigger than you know
In each and every way
If you have all of this
You’re richer than you think
Some of us have none of this
Existing on the brink
And if you are a lucky one
Have more than you need
Sharing is so helpful
Like water to a seed
So touch in when you want more
Understand it’s true
You have most of what you need
Right in front of you
Knowing this will steer you right
To a grateful path
Where we sit and breathe it in
Because we know at last
It’s the little things in life
That helps the soul remember
It’s not in the
Wanting
Dear
Gratitudes
The
Treasure
I took a lot of time the past couple of weeks, to dig into the “why” of my own need for more.
Our consumerism and capitalism continue to tell us that what we have...
Isn’t enough. The big machine relies on us to consume without thinking
To gain wealth at any cost
And
I wanted to remind myself that the beautiful parts of life are the most simple ones.
This also made me take a deep look into my own privilege and worth
As so many on our planet don’t have access to
Clean air
Clean water
Food
The things we in our privileged culture take for granted every day.....
So if you do have access to these without struggle
You
Actually
Have
Everything
You Could Ever Need
Right In Front Of You
And maybe if we all took a look at what we actually need there would be enough to go around.
I’m learning everyday
P.S
I do not run so fast I fly......
I walk jog at a slow to moderate pace....
I have an incredibly lush imagination so that helps a lot☀️
Big Love
